the day of your appointment

Upon arrival at our clinic you will be given information regarding the procedure, which you are required to read. There are also medical forms you will need to fill out. Once you have completed filling out your forms, and Admitting has validated your health card information, you will see a counsellor. The counsellor will review your medical history and discuss your birth control options with you. She has your best interests in mind, so please feel free to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have about your decision, alternative options, or about the procedure itself.

The counsellor will ask you to sign the Informed Consent Form which you will have already reviewed, explaining the possible complications of having an abortion. This may scare you, but it’s important for you to know that this legal “full disclosure” document is for your protection and information. The abortion technique we use is extremely safe and it ensures that you will be able to become pregnant again should you want to. Our safety record is unsurpassed, and complications are rare.

You will then have an ultrasound to confirm how far along you are, as well as a finger-prick blood test to determine your RH factor. A blood test may not be required if you bring a blood-type card indicating your blood type. If you are RH negative you will be given an injection to safeguard any future pregnancies.

Next, a nurse will accompany you to the operating room to meet your doctor.

Your doctor will do a routine gynecological exam. Testing for STIs will also be done at this time. If any of your tests come back positive, “Jane” will call to notify you. If this happens, please don’t panic. It is very important that you follow up with us. STIs are easily treated with prescribed antibiotics or medication; however if left untreated they can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and ultimately, a loss of fertility.

At our clinics, your privacy and confidentiality is completely respected. We will never relay your test results to anyone but you.
